you them common ancestors double line: marriage
Your aunt's daughter (or son) is your first cousin, usually just called your cousin. You share grandparents and you're the same generation.
If the aunt is an aunt by marriage (your uncle's wife), her children with your uncle are still your first cousins. Her children from a different relationship are not blood relatives (sometimes called step-cousins).
How we worked it out
Follow the chain one step at a time:
- Your aunt: aunt (2 up, 1 down)
- Your aunt's daughter: first cousin (2 up, 2 down)
Your grandparents are her grandparents: they are your common ancestors.
Same generation as you.
Count the generations to your common ancestors: 2 up from you, 2 down to her. The cousin number is one less than the smaller count (2), so first cousin. The counts are the same, so not removed.
